Duke Charles V. of Lorraine in the Costume of Jason
Jan Thomas and workshop, after 1678
oil, wood, 42,5×28,5 cm
State castle Hrádek u Nechanic, inv. č. HN 2487
The portrait of Archduke Charles V. of Lorraine follows the opera La Conquista del Vello d´oro, which took place in February 1678 on the occasion of Charles` marriage to the daughter of Emperor Ferdinand III., Eleonora Maria Josefa. The Archduke is presented as Jason seeking to obtain a golden fleece, an allegory of the love of the newlyweds. The painting, made in the workshop of the Flemish painter Jan Thomas, is part of a larger cycle of costume portraits located in the castle of Hrádek u Nechanic.
